In this installment of our how to surf guide we look at surfing gear.
A surfboard is all you really need to surf, though numerous people find surfboard wax and a wetsuit beneficial.
The average surfboard is about 55 to 60 centimeters wide and about 2.7 meters long. Although there are many styles of boards available most are generally made from polyurethane foam with a fiberglass coating. It is common to have one fin under the board and an ankle bracelet that will connect you to the board.
If you are a beginner you will want to consider buying a rounder board because they are safe and easy to balance. It’s best to borrow or rent a number of boards when learning how to surf before choosing one to buy so that you can find the one that best matches your needs.
Applying surfboard wax to your board isn’t necessary, but many surfers find that it helps. This is because the surface of a surfboard is somewhat slippery to begin with and is made even more so when it’s placed in water. The board should especially be waxed in the areas where you hands and feet will touch it.
You might not nee your own wetsuit, since the use of one is determined by your own ability to cope with cold waters and your surfing location. Being continuously exposed to water depletes your body heat more readily when your skin remains wet, even though your body is working very hard while you are surfing.
A wetsuit will keep you warm while you surf, even in very cold water, by retaining a barrier of moisture between your skin and the suit, which is then warmed by your natural body heat. They’re lightweight, highly elastic and don’t impose on your flexibility. Wetsuits are also available to be rented at many popular locations for surfing.
I have permanent marker pen on my surfboard and want to remove it without damaging the board. Any advice?
I have read that toothpaste works wonders on hard surfaces, but am scared to try it on the board without confirmation that it won’t harm my baby…. any ideas?? Quite urgent please… Just wanted to say THANK YOU to all who have answered… going to give it ago this weekend, so will let you know what worked best!!
spray some hairspray onto the board and a cloth…..hairspray is non-corrosive so it will not damage the resin surface on the board….keep rubbin til it comes off….and give your “girlfriend” a hug from me when your out there surfin.
